Bio:

An attorney by training, Tim has worked on water law and policy for the past 20 years. After practicing law at Sidley & Austin in Washington, D.C. and Tokyo, Japan, he returned to Utah in 2004 to serve as a State Director for Trout Unlimited, where he worked on environmental water policy and collaborative projects designed to improve habitat fish habitat in ways that met the needs of farmers, ranchers, and rural communities. He currently works in the brine shrimp industry, where he leads business strategic planning, legal, and governmental affairs efforts, particularly those affecting Great Salt Lake. He also works as Senior Advisor to the College of Science at the University of Utah. Tim served eight years in the Utah House of Representatives, including four years in appointed leadership. During his time in the legislature, he focused on natural resource issues, particularly water.

Tim holds an undergraduate degree in Political Science from BYU and a law degree from Columbia University. He serves on numerous boards and councils, including the Great Salt Lake Advisory Council, Great Salt Lake Strike Team, Trust Advisory Board, Integrated Watershed Plan Advisory Board, Envision Utah, Colorado Plateau Archaeological Alliance, and the Wilkes Center for Climate Science & Policy.

Abstract: Many Utah businesses are deeply concerned about Great Salt Lake but have struggled to access good, real-time information and know how best to engage. This growing group of Utah businesses and trade organizations are working together to make sure Utah’s business voice is heard when it comes to efforts to conserve water and to protect Great Salt Lake. Tim Hawkes and other members of the Business Council will share an update on this effort and explain why business engagement is vital to help sustain the Lake.
