The Office of the Great Salt Lake Commissioner recently released its Year One report, detailing accomplishments and lessons learned since its establishment in 2023. The report highlights the approval of the Great Salt Lake Strategic Plan in December 2023, which outlines short-, medium-, and long-term actions organized under four key objectives. We applaud the work of the Great Salt Lake Commissioner's Office, and look forward to the continued progress as they enter year two.
Significant progress has been made in implementing the plan's short-term actions, coordinating efforts among 12 state agencies, local districts, communities, farmers, irrigation companies, businesses, churches, federal partners, and other stakeholders. The lake saw a rise of 6.5 feet since its historic low in November 2022, reaching its intermediate target elevation of 4,195 feet for a short period before summer evaporation brought it to its current elevation of 4,193'.
The 2024 legislative session resulted in several new laws and funding allocations to support the lake's health and implement strategic actions. This includes $40 million for the Great Salt Lake Watershed Enhancement Trust and investments in water conservation, wetland restoration, and endangered species protection in the Great Salt Lake Basin.
The report underscores the importance of ongoing water conservation efforts, collaborative action, and taking advantage of wet years to benefit the lake. As the Commissioner's Office continues to coordinate and "quarterback" these efforts, all Utahns are encouraged to work together for the long-term health of the Great Salt Lake.
