The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) has recognized Great Salt Lake as a Geological Heritage Site. After the first 100 sites were ratified in 2022, Great Salt Lake was ratified this year alongside sites like Devils Tower, Uyuni Salt Flat, and Mount Vesuvius in the "second 100". This designation demonstrates recognition from this international body of the important role Great Salt Lake plays in preserving Geoheritage (Click here to learn more about Geoheritage).
"IUGS recognition of Geological Heritage Sites gives visibility to those sites. It identifies them as being of the highest scientific value. They are sites that served to develop the science of geology, particularly its early history. They are the world’s best demonstra- tions of geologic features and processes. They are the sites of fabulous discoveries of the Earth and its history." - IUGS International Commission on Geoheritage
