Great Salt Lake Institute's Salty Science Seminars Return

Westminster's Great Salt Lake Institute has two Salty Science Seminars this November!

Circumnavigation of Great Salt Lake with Scott Baxter and Matt Kahabka

November 10, 2021

7-9pm

Virtual webinar

Free registration at this link.

This summer Great Salt Lake shrunk to the very lowest level EVER recorded (by far!). Scott Baxter and Matt Kahabka got out their self-made kayaks and circumnavigated the lake to document the state of this important ecosystem. During their 6 day tour they experienced brine shrimp washing into their boats, ate lunch on GSLs reefs (microbialites), slept in salt and immersed themselves in this important ecosystem like few other people have done before. Please listen to "The State and Fate of GSL - ll" that was aired on RadioWest for a preview of this amazing experience.

Microbialite Madness

November 17, 2021

12-1pm

Virtual webinar

Free registration at this link.

Microbialites (Great Salt Lake's reefs) have been in the news lately with extreme low lake levels. Come hear the current state of microbialites at Great Salt Lake with Dr. Bonnie Baxter (Westminster College Biologist) and Michael VandenBerg (Utah Geological Survey). We will hear a tale of biology doing chemistry that makes geology AND is a critical player in the food web of Great Salt Lake.

Both events will be recorded and posted to the Great Salt Lake Institute YouTube Channel.
