Bonnie Baxter

Professor and Chair, Biology

Director, Great Salt Lake Institute, Westminster College

Bio:

Baxter has been studying the microbial communities of Great Salt Lake for almost two decades, applying her background in cellular biochemistry to the lake’s saltiest brines.  This approach has led to many discoveries relating to photobiology, DNA damage, microbial diversity, and microbialite formation.  In 2008, Baxter and colleagues created Great Salt Lake Institute, which serves to facilitate projects and enhance research and education efforts on Great Salt Lake.  Through this non-profit organization, the institute pulls together Westminster undergraduates and researchers from all around the world to study this unique ecosystem and share their discoveries. Baxter is also dedicated to integration of research in undergraduate science education and to outreach efforts that inspire learning and stewardship.

Will deliver closing remarks on Wednesday, May 11th at 3:30pm
