Great Salt Lake Commissioner's Strategic Plan Released

January 16, 2024

In May 2023, Governor Cox appointed Dr. Brian Steed as the Great Salt Lake Commissioner in accordance with H.B. 491 Amendments Related to The Great Salt Lake. Commissioner Steed has since hired Tim Davis as Deputy Commissioner. The Commissioner's Office was tasked with preparing, updating, and overseeing the execution of a strategic plan for the long-term health of Great Salt Lake. The highly-anticipated plan was released to the public on January 16, 2024, the first day of the 2024 Utah General Legislative Session. It aims to balance the ecological, economic, and societal interests surrounding the Lake through ongoing data collection, evaluation of tradeoffs, and short, medium, and long-term management actions. Key goals include securing adequate water inflows through conservation, shepherding saved water to the Lake, protecting water and air quality, and continuing robust collaboration among government agencies, stakeholders, and the public.
