Compass Minerals, one of the largest consumptive water users in the Great Salt Lake basin has agreed to permanently direct 200,000 acre feet of water to Great Salt Lake annually, accounting for a large portion of the consumptive water right the company holds. This voluntary agreement comes after provisions made in HB 453, passed during the 2024 General Legislative Session directed the Utah Division of Water Rights to create a distribution management plan for the Lake, required mineral extractors on the Lake to enter into cooperative agreements, and permitted the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands to acquire water rights.

We applaud this cooperative effort, and look forward to seeing the positive impacts to Great Salt Lake.
